The listings in this directory were prepared by members to aid publishers, authors, and other potential clients in their search for a qualified and dependable legal indexer. All listed members are in good standing with American Society for Indexers or a sister society. The Legal Indexers special interest group encourages publishers and authors to discuss projects with indexers and independently confirm appropriate qualifications.
You can contact individual members listed in the directory below. If you prefer to have us post information about your project to our email list so that individual members of the group can respond to you, rather than contacting individuals on this directory, please click here. Information we need is:
- When is your project ready for indexing? (if a print book, we need to have a searchable PDF in which final pagination is set)
- How many pages is the book, and who is the audience? (general trade book, scholarly book written for attorneys, etc.)
- Describe the book. What is the subject, are there footnotes or endnotes that need to be indexed, is it one author or multi-authored, many illustrations, or special requirements you have for the index?
- What kind of turnaround time do you need for the index?
- Who should the indexer contact?
Keep in mind that difficulty of the material, shorter timelines, multiauthored books where each chapter or section is written by a different author, heavy notes, and other factors will affect pricing.

I’m a former attorney and am also an author, editor, and fact checker, so I understand all aspects of creating a book and approach projects with that wide vision. In addition to legal texts I frequently index textbooks, self-help books, cookbooks, business books, and much more.
With a JD, 6 years as a practicing attorney, and 18+ years as a law librarian, I have the legal background to understand your project and provide the kind of index your audience expects. I’ve been indexing for more than 10 years, and my work has included legal newsletters, deskbooks, practice guides, textbooks, and general audience legal books. I’ve been an officer of the ASI Legal Indexing Special Interest Group from inception in 2006 until 2011, and 2016-present, and also an officer and committee member of my regional indexing chapter for years. In addition to legal indexing, I also index social sciences, education, political science, business, and other topics. Please let me know how I can help you with your project.
